To assist local talented athletes so they can achieve their sporting potential and inspire others coming after them. There is a huge financial cost to training and competing at a local regional level – 80% of athletes struggle to meet it without support. The Foundation wants to support athletes who aspire to participate in Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The application process opens in December and closes in February and awards are distributed in the following financial year (ie from April). Check our awards page for the criteria. Successful applicants are notified approximately eight weeks after the closing date. During the application process the Halo Sport Foundation works in partnership with SportsAid to ensure that support for athletes reaches those identified by their National Governing Bodies (NGB) as having special talent and ensures that our Foundation joins the National Talent Pathways agreed within British Sport. A panel of experts assesses the information provided by an applicant, NGB and SportsAid.
Primarily the Foundation looks to support Olympic and Paralympic sports. However applications will be considered from other sports recognised by Sport Wales and Sport England.
Successful applicants receive tailored backing designed to remove everyday training barriers so they can focus on reaching their podium potential.
Once accepted, support is delivered through the following:
- FREE Annual Training Membership: Athletes receive a complimentary pass granting access to Halo Leisure facilities across our network (including gyms, swimming pools, and standard group fitness/conditioning spaces where age-appropriate).
- Cross-Regional Access: Your membership is recognised across Halo centres in Bridgend County Borough, Herefordshire, and Torfaen County, giving you the flexibility to train whether you are at home, near your club, or travelling for studies.
- Ambassador & Peer Community: You become part of a recognised cohort of athletes backed by our sporting ambassadors—including Olympic, Paralympic, and world champions—and receive invitations to celebratory events such as our annual Foundation Awards.
Please Note: The Foundation covers training facility access and fitness conditioning spaces; it does not directly cover private coaching fees, individual personal travel, or club event entry fees.
Yes, although athletes already funded may only be eligible for top up or training membership awards.
